In this post, I want you to generate a list of 5-10 different topics that interest you for this paper. Then in two-three sentences explore what you know about the topic and why you picked it.
Then in about 250 words I want you to narrow your list down to one or two and think through why these might be a good choice for you to research. Make sure think about how you are going to get be able to research the topic i.e. what type of observation might you be able to do; who could your interview; where could you look for articles, journals, magazines, etc?
Throughout the process of picking a research topic, I have been contemplating between a couple different topics. Some of them being: gun trafficking, OCD, unsanitary dining facilities, senior citizen homes, and sugar gliders. I picked gun trafficking because I love shooting and it would be boring to just research how guns work. I know so far that Al Qaeda has control over most of Pakistan’s production of weaponry. The second topic I chose is OCD and I chose it because my stepbrother used to have really bad OCD so I have seen it first hand and I believe whether people know it or not, everybody has a little bit of OCD in them. Next, I chose unsanitary dining facilities because I would like to see how dirty the school dining halls are. Every time I go to the dining hall on campus it takes me a very long time to pick my utensils because they are all usually dirty. A senior citizen home would be an interesting topic for me because I am very close with my grandmother and I love old people. I actually drove by a home the other day and it looked so boring that I would want to research it and go play bingo with old people and make sure they have a good time. Finally my last topic is sugar gliders because I have always wanted one and before I purchase one I would like to know more about them. So far I know they are really cute and live off of fruit. I think the two most interesting topics for me would be OCD and also the sugar gliders. OCD is really interesting because for the longest time my stepbrothers OCD got extreme and it is interesting to see how everyone has a little bit of OCD. I would research this by formally interviewing my stepbrother and people watching. I could also talk to a Psychology major who specializes in OCD to retrieve more information. There are many articles on this problem because many people have this disorder and people are becoming more aware of this issue. I would also like to research the senior citizen home because I have been grown up to respect my elders and I hear stories all the time of how they are mistreated in their homes. I also know many of them don’t have family come visit so I would like to at least make sure they have good times even though their family members are not there.
ReplyDeleteFor this paper, I have come up with several questions that interest me on writing. Is it fair that music artists and actors get paid as much as they do? This interests me because some of the hardest working/smartest people on the world don’t even get paid as much as these artists do for an album, but this can be contradicting because these artists are smart and work hard to do what they do. Should it be illegal to beg for money on the streets? This interests me because I see homeless people on the streets asking for money, but are they actually going to use that money for food, or will they blow it on drugs and alcohol? Can we trust what weight loss programs have to say to us? Magazines advertise losing 10 pounds in 10 days, will these people lose these 10 pounds and be healthy or will they just gain it right back? Should the legal drinking at be 18? We can vote at 18, but drink at 21, is this safe to lower the age or will it become even more of an issue? Should tanning salons be illegal? People get skin cancer from over exposure to these rays, but is that their own fault or the tanning salons? Is plastic surgery really the answer? Are people overdoing it with plastic surgery and gone too far, or is t okay? how do we know when it is a problem? And my last question, can carrying guns around be safe? It may make people feel secure, but will there be more violence? From all these topics and questions I have come up with, I have narrowed it down to if the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18. This could be a good choice for me to research because it is a question that is frequently because asked and discussed by several others. I can get my research by looking up statistics and everything to know about the drinking age being 21. I can interview people that hold positions in law and in the government and see what everyone has to say about this to have different views. I can look for journals, articles, and magazines either on the web, they would have to be mostly scholarly, but I could also find articles from magazines targeted towards teenagers that have discussed this previously to see their inputs on this topic.
ReplyDeleteSome topics I would like to research are; MDMA being used in treatment for soldiers with PTSD, body modification, communism, Kurt Cobain, the current electronic music scene, ADD and ADHD, Anxiety, Homelessness in America, and the pros and cons of capitalism. I picked MDMA being used in treatment for soldiers with PTSD because it seems to me that there a hundreds of documents being published about the usefulness that MDMA can have in a therapeutic setting it stuns me that it has not already been put into practical use. On top of that, we have highly addictive substances already being prescribed like amphetamines and opiates to children and senior citizens and everyone in between so it is a myth to me why pharmaceutical companies would have any stance against using MDMA in treatment for PTSD. I picked body modification because it is something that is extremely individualistic. I find it strange that any person would look down on people for having various body modifications so I would want to maybe get to the bottom of this, also as a person with body modification I feel heavy connection with this topic. Communism is also a topic that interests me greatly, I find that a political system where everyone is equal is by far the best form of government any country can have. I honestly believe it just has never been put to the proper test and most everyone’s opinion on it is smeared by its ugly history and by propaganda and media. I would like to research Kurt Cobain because he is my idol and I feel like he had a great impact on our society. I would like to research the current electronic music scene because it was the music I was brought up listening to. My half-brother was a DJ so growing up I was surrounded by electronic music and now that I have grown up, have aspirations of being a DJ/producer and have developed my own taste in electronic music I feel like that this would be a thoroughly exciting paper to write. ADD and ADHD are two medical conditions I find immense interest in, for one thing I am curious to why they are prescribed something as neurotoxic as amphetamines and not something safer. Also I know this is one of the most over diagnosed conditions in American and I would want to know why that is. Anxiety interests me because I know many people who are afflicted with heavy anxiety and I know how impairing anxiety can be. I also know that alprarzolam and many of the medications used to treat people with anxiety are heavily abused and so I wonder if there are any safer alternatives. Homelessness in America is also a topic that interests me, this is a topic that interests me because it disgusts me that I live in a country where homelessness is still prevalent, where people’s classist views on society make them feel as if they are in some way superior to people that are homeless. Lastly I picked the pros and cons of capitalism because I feel it is an economic system viewed in a very biased way. I am not saying it is not good but I am also saying it has a wide array of flaws that are often not looked at because many people have deemed it as the best economic system. The two most interesting topics I picked are MDMA being used in treatment for soldiers with PTSD, and Kurt Cobain. I feel as if these two topics I can do without bias in anyway. I just think that these two topics need more light shed on them, one of the topics being a huge topic of debate in America that many people are completely unaware of, the other is an artist who I feel that is highly misunderstood and who I feel had a lot more to him than just angst filled music and the nineties. Also finding research for both these topics will be fairly easy since there is much documented information on both these topics. Also I am starting to become highly interested in politics and I have always been a big fan of Nirvana so either of these topics works for me.
ReplyDeleteIt's hard just coming up with five topics for a Research Paper because there are so many things that a person could write about! I came up with the five topics...wasn't easy, but I did. I chose: Obesity, Bipolar Disorder, tattoos, alcohol (drinking age), and Gay Marriages (if possible to write about it without putting an opinion in it.) I chose obesity because it’s a really affecting America today. There are so many temptations nowadays with everyone; grocery stores stocked with sugary foods, fast food restaurants, and lack of exercise. Also, because I really enjoy watching The Biggest Loser every Tuesday night because it makes such an impact on the people that appear on the show. I chose Bipolar disorder because it’s a serious disorder to some people. I would be able to interview my best friends mom if I chose this as the topic I wanted to do my paper on. She would have to be okay with it though of course. Also I would use the Internet, and magazine articles also if there are any previous articles on this matter. Tattoos are very interesting to me quite surprisingly to people who truly know me. I would actually like to get a tattoo myself, however it would be tricky because since I want to be an educator, I’m not allowed to have visible permanent markings on my body. But I would ask a tattooist or my friend Cody about the tattoos, also go into a tattoo parlor and ask a tattooist frequently asked questions in person. I think the drinking age would be an interesting topic to write about because years ago, the drinking age was 18 and now it’s 21. However, many college students and underage teenagers are able to obtain alcohol with a fake i.d or from someone who is 21 that is willing to buy them the alcohol. I could interview my parents about the issue and how effected the community was when they changed the law years ago, and also do some research on the Internet and maybe even locate a magazine or newspaper from when the alcohol drinking age was changed. And lastly, Gay Marriages. I think it’s a huge issue that many gay couples go through because that law is only legal in 5 states in the U.S. I could possibly talk to a politician I have a friend that campaigned for Rick Scott during elections. Also I have a family member who is gay who could give me their thoughts on the situation because it affects him and his partner.
ReplyDeleteFive topics I find particularly interesting are global warming’s effect on animals, options for finding alternative sources for fuel, BP’s long-term affect on the gulf, appearance and in young adolescence, and social networking sites effect on human communication and interaction. I have always had an interest in the environment and now especially with the current crisis, it seems necessary to research the topic to reveal why and how our current condition came to be. Though we have studied the environmental effect of global warming on humans, I believe many ignore the effect it places on animals and the habitats in which they live. Alternative fuel is a very popular topic with gas prices increasing at a geometric rate. The need for more efficient and sustainable substitutes grows each and everyday. Last years oil spill will affect the world longer than most of us will be here. Pollution proved only one part of the final outcome of which I would like to discover. Appearance is vital to the comfort and confidence of oneself when we are young. I plan to delve into the reasons regarding this issue, uprooting sources, which cause us to act as we do. Social networking sites allow us to reunite and keep in touch with old friends. However, with that goal once in mind, has the design maintained the same purpose or rather has it evolved into something bigger than predicted? The two topics I plan to focus on are BP’s long term affect on the gulf and social networking sites effect on human interaction. With almost five million barrels of oil said to be released by the oil spill, its hard to imagine the disaster as just a little accident. The spill took months to cap, starting in April of last year, finally being closed in September. Many were devastated by this incident, especially fish farmers and tourist attractions along the gulf coast. However, aside from the financial aspects, the most damage was received by the environment and wildlife residing in the gulf area and beyond. Working its way into a very long complex food chain, the oil continues to hurt the lives of many animals for years to come. Natural habitats once providing shelter and necessary resources for animals are gone, along with the food and nutrients that were supplied to them. I plan to interview local professors and scholars of the issue. My other topic, social networking sites, proves the fastest growing trend of our generation. It is easy to find entire families located on Facebook. Updating your status provides many with a way to receive constant attention and consideration. Rather than presenting themselves physically, participants can meet and communicate through terms of online chatting. Social networking is radically altering the way in which we communicate with each other. I plan to interview local sociology and psychology professors to gain insight into this topic of interest that has grown into being an international matter.
ReplyDeleteThe five topics that I am looking at are, does throwing the shot-put involve strength or more so technique? Should marriage be a part of the government? How much does it affect your life expectancy if you are over seven feet? Should high school students be charged as adults to limit crime? Should colleges compete in girls weightlifting? The reason I would choose does throwing the shot-put involve strength or more so technique is because I am a shot-putter. I recently just started throwing shot-put my senior year in high school and I really don’t know much about it. The techniques used to throw the shot-put are similar so maybe it has something to do with math and explosion. This research paper could make me a better thrower. I chose should marriage be a part of the government because I like the constitution. I think it’s pretty interesting what the constitution says and how it can sometime contradict itself. I chose how much it affects your life expectancy if you are over seven feet because tall people interest me. I thought I heard once that it does but I’m not really sure. I would love to find out more about the heart of a very tall person. I chose should high school students be charged as adults to limit crime because when it comes to crime I am a classical theorist but others may think differently. The government may charge them as children for specific reasons. The last topic I chose is should colleges compete in girls weightlifting. I chose this because I was a weightlifter in high school and there were numerous girls apart of this program. Some of the best lifters went on and did nothing with their lives because there is nothing preparing them for the Olympics. When I narrow my list down I would choose does shot-put involve strength or more so technique and should marriage be a part of the government. For the shot-put topic I could interview my coach asking him questions about technique and strength. I could also look at one of my team mates throw. I could compare strength technique and all the other things it take to throw. I found numerous edu sites explaining how to throw the shot-put and giving me information about the shot. I could use stack magazine which is one of the most popular sports magazine. For my other topic should marriage be a part of the constitution. I took a law class and one of the things that interested me was when we talked about marriage. It did say that religion is not to be a part of the government so, what is marriage? Is it a religious act? I could interview my old professor. I could observe the senate and the House of Representatives at work. I could see what it would take to actually change something like marriage. When it comes to sites I can get information from the .gov sites concerning the constitution. I am still trying to figure out what exactly I would want to research. I love that fact that I could improve my throwing and getting a grade at the same time. However law is so interesting and I would love to know whether or not having marriage apart of the law is unconstitutional.
ReplyDeleteMy list of topics would have to be: tattoos, the blues (musical genre), the New York Yankees, littering & pollution, Buddhism, and schizophrenia. The reason I chose tattoos is because I grew up around them; my mom has several as many family members and friends. I have one myself (which I got on my 18th Birthday, one year ago from February 20th), and I plan on getting another in a few weeks on my 19th Birthday. It would not only be convenient that I am getting one when it comes to the observations and interview, but I could also explain my views on how I do not feel tattoos should be looked down upon, but rather as a form of individually and expression. I love music; some genres more than others, but looked at as a whole, I cannot get enough of it. This is why I chose the blues. I feel like I know a lot about more modern music genres, but blues is a genre I have always wanted to study and learn more about. I love the New York Yankees and baseball is my favorite sport. I would love to be able to go through history and be able to find out why they have the name and reputation in baseball that they do today. They’ve had some of the best baseball players in history play on their team, and I would love to be able to research more about them. I want to be an environmental lawyer because I feel very strongly on recycling, going green, and preserving the earth. I feel like littering and pollution are two huge problems we face today and they can be focused on both nationally and internationally and doing research would give me great insight on ways to prevent pollution and going green. I am agnostic, but I am interested in many religions and learning the customs and ways of those religions. One of my favorites to learn about is Buddhism. I look at it as more of a way of life and I find their beliefs very interesting. Last, I have chosen alcoholism. This disorder runs in my family, and so I have close ties with it. In society today with college students, I feel like many feel it is okay to be an alcoholic. In the song “Shots” by Lil Jon, he raps “now where my alcoholics at”, alcoholism is almost promoted and targeted towards young adults.
ReplyDeleteAfter going through all of these topics, I have decided that I will either write about tattoos or the blues. As mentioned above, it would be convenient for me to write about tattoos along with my interest in them. I would research them by trying to find books in the library, through internet sources, magazines on tattoos, and by talking to tattoo artists. There are numerous tattoo parlors around Tallahassee, and I would either go to several of them or talk to friends to see where they recommend I go. As for the interview, I would interview one of the artists at the tattoo parlor. My second topic I would choose is the blues. I love music, and I feel like it would be a great opportunity for me to learn more about a non-mainstream genre. I would interview one of my best friends, Sammy, who plays blues. He just returned from a blues competition in Tennessee, so he knows the genre quite well. As for observations, I would try to find a blues band here in Tallahassee or find a place where I could go to learn more about it. For research, I would read music magazines such as Rolling Stone, look online, and utilize the library.
Some topics that I find interesting and would like to research are; psychedelic psychotherapy, drug and steroid use in professional sports, anxiety, chiropractic research, chiropractic enhancing athletes performance. I picked psychedelic psychotherapy because it caught my attention when my previous psychology professor talked about it. I think its interesting how psychedelics can be used to treat various psychological disorders. I chose drug and steroid use in professional sports because I love sports and always hear about athletes getting suspended for the use. I know that athletes use steroids to gain an advantage on athletes they are competing against. Heavy fines and suspensions are usually given out to players that do this. Anxiety interest me because I have a two fairly close friends that have anxiety. One suffers from a very serious case of anxiety, while the other has a very minor case. It can seriously impair normal, everyday functioning, especially in the more serious cases. Minor anxiety, on the other hand, is more of inconvenience, but can still impair daily functions. I picked the two chiropractic topics because chiropractic care really interest me. I want to become a chiropractor, so I think writing a research paper that is chiropractic related would be appropriate. I find it very fascinating how chiropractic in general has been steadily gaining grounds over the past years. Every year it seems as if it is gaining more and more scientific support. Studies have been regularly released showing that numerous chiropractic treatments are both safe and extremely effective. Chiropractic enhancing athletes performance is probably the topic that interest me the most. It combines the career I want to pursue with sports, so I believe it would be the best topic for my research paper. I know athletes like Steve Smith, Joe Montana, and even Michael Jordan all received regular chiropractic adjustments to improve their abilities. Some athletes have even stated that they notice that their game is not as sharp if they do not receive their regular adjustments. For my research paper, I could interview my family chiropractor or a friend of mine who just recently graduated from chiropractic college. Also, my grandfather was a chiropractor and has some books and articles on the subject. Since he used some different, older techniques, I could research how far chiropractic care and technology has come in the recent years.
ReplyDeletewhen coming up with the five topics, I really wanted to write about a topic that would interest me and my first choice was gun trafficking. I feel like a lot of people in this country have easy access to guns and its a major issue in to days society. Also guns are impacting the lives of many, and i thought it is important to bring up awareness. Another option was drug trafficking, drug trafficking is the movement of money and drugs in between each city and neighborhood. I believe that drugs are such a major impact in everyday life of students that writing a research paper can express the importance of the situation. Now my favorite topic was the influence of rap music on todays society. Music especially plays a hugh role in the influence of kids all around the world. Also the forth topic is, are professional athletics getting paid to much money. Some say they do and other say they don't but if you pull up the facts maybe in some ways they might be getting paid to little. Their involved with sponsors and other global corporation that advertise through sports. My last topic was a topic that is debated a lot because of the many people that use it. How is social networking affecting our society and impacting kids all over the world. Social networking as been used to stay in touch with friends and family and also for advertisement or media purposes. After looking at all of my options i was stuck between the influence of rap music in todays society and are professional athletics getting paid to much. Both of this topics have a lot of answers that people want to know like for example why are baseball players now a days getting paid over 100 of million dollars to play a game, or how the influence of rap music are affecting the young kids or our society. Also there are a lot of information data bases where you can find articles and facts about the affect of rap music in society. Finally these two topics interest me a lot because its two topics that really influence the life's of young students and kids that want to grow up and be an athlete or a musician to influence the next generation of kids.
ReplyDeleteOne topic that has always boggled my mind was the drinking age. It doesn’t make much sense to me why an 18 year old is allowed to go to war and use a gun, potentially to kill someone else, and can vote yet they cannot drink legally. 21 seems too far of a stretch from 18 and why 21? Why not 19 or 20? We are legally adults when we turn 18, so why should we not be able to legally drink. Another topic I find interesting is whether athletes should eat differently? All students, including athletes can afford to have healthier choices at a dining hall. If one is an athlete does it make it okay for them to have their own dining hall separate from all other non-athlete students? Internet impact o society is also is a topic that interests me. The Internet over the years has played a growing role in most people’s major moments in life. Now and days, when students are deciding what college they want to go to, they do some research on them online first. Another moment the Internet has had an effect on, is finding a new place to live. There are so many major moments in life that the Internet has impacted on us. Obesity is also a topic that catches my attention. So many Americans are overweight and there are constantly people buying diet products, but then why are there still so many overweight people? Is it the lifestyle, the environment, the food at schools? Smoking on college campuses also interests me. Should anyone be able to smoke cigarettes anywhere or are there smoking zones and non-smoking zones? If there are, who is there to enforce these rules? The two topics that interest me the most are the smoking on campus and the topic about athletes eating differently.
ReplyDeleteA few topics I find interesting would be study habits in the library of college students or student interaction with professors. I want to possibly explore these two topics because I find them relatable and even beneficial to my time here at Florida State University. These could be a good choice for me to research because I am able to observe while in class and while doing my own studying in the library. I could interview different students in different subjects to avoid biased. Looking through articles and journals would also provide adequate information for my questions. Other topics that peak my interest would be if vendors on the street actually make any money by approaching people on the street rather than just scaring them away. I tend to steer clear of people approaching me on the street and am curious if this is true towards others. One more topic that I would enjoy research is if the development of the Internet has a positive of negative on the self-esteem of girls. This especially interests me because of the crimes committed due to Internet bullying.
ReplyDeleteFive topics that I am considering are the effects television has on children, body scanners in airports, animal hoarders or just hoarders in general, euthanasia on animals because there is overcrowding in shelters, and what the effects of fast food have on the United States. I am not entirely sure which one I'm going to choose yet. I want to write about something that I am interested in and will be able to write a lot about. I narrowed it down to animals hoarders/general hoarders(might just combine them) and euthanasia on animals because there is overcrossing in shelters. The show hoarders really got me hooked. I'm going to research why people hoard and how it starts. Do they have any psychological disorders. I would also find out the effects it has on their family and friends. It amazes me that people could live in complete fifth and not care. Most animal hoarders believe that they are helping the animals from being killed at shelters. I want to find out why they can't see that the fifth the animals are living in are actually making them sick or killing them. I'm going to get my research from magazines, internet, and try to interview someone. It would be difficult to interview a hoarder though because most hoarders are too embarrassed to let people know. Maybe there is a site online that helps hoarders with their problem and I could get connected to them through that. The other topic is a pretty touchy topic. My feelings might leak through animals being put down because of scarce room in shelters so I'm not sure if I will choose that one. I got interested in this topic from a show called Last Chance Highway. Its about the fight to save helpless dogs from being killed because of overcrowding due to people not spaying/neutering their dogs. Last Chance Highway rescues the dogs from kill shelters and hold onto them until they find someone willing to adopt them. At the end of the week they travel hundreds of dogs up North to their new home. I would research the amount of animals being killed each week and the people who are trying to save them. I could stop at a humane society to interview their employees about it and get more information online.
ReplyDeleteFor my research paper I have been thinking of some topics, one of my favorite things in the world is baseball so anything involving the Yankees would be interesting to me, such as does their payroll really affect how much they win? I would also consider writing about the use of steroids, should they be allowed in professional sports? As a college student I find it weird that I am allowed to vote and have an opinion in that runs our country, but I am not allowed to drink alcohol, should we lower the drinking age to 18? Also as an athlete I find it interesting when children play sports for the pleasure of their parents rather than their own happiness. So the effects parents have on their children by pushing them into sports. Lastly, I feel very strongly about the death penalty, should it be legalized?
ReplyDeleteAs I said before baseball is extremely interesting to me and it is a hot topic when there are debates between my friends and I about who is the best baseball team and they always end up saying well the Yankees buy their wins, so I would like to really like to show that just because they have the highest payroll doesn’t mean they are buying championships. For my observations I could compare the payrolls of the teams that have beaten and lost to the Yankees in the playoffs in the last few years, also I could compare the payrolls the years they won the World Series to the years they didn’t make it. I could interview someone in a baseball organization who understands the payroll and how it affects the team. My second topic is harder to narrow because I am stuck between the drinking age being 18 and parents pushing their children into sports. The drinking age should be 18, if we are privileged enough to be able to choose the person running our country then we should have the responsibility to choose to drink responsibly. 18-year-old men and women serve everyday to protect this country, they are risking their lives to be able to be free and they still have restrictions on drinking. I could use statistics to show that 18 year olds are going to drink whether it’s legal or not so doing this would allow less kids to get in trouble, and when 18 year olds go out of the country they can drink so why shouldn’t they be allowed to when they’re at home? I could interview someone in the government that knows about laws. Lastly, I was pushed into sports when I was a kid but I grew to love them, my brother was the complete opposite, so how does it affect a child when their parents continue to make them play sports when they no longer enjoy it. I could interview athletes at FSU to find out their opinion, then a coach or two to see how they feel it effects children. I could get stats related to children in sports and how far they make it after middle school, high school, and college.
There are so many different topics I could of chosen but I mostly enjoy things related to history or biology. I wanted to either research in biology the different theories of the causes of neurodegenerative diseases or sickle cell anemia. As for history I have always had a fascination with Alexander the great, Ronald Reagan, and Winston Churchill. neurodegenerative disease has always been an interesting topic in the medical work. It includes Alzheimer's and autism, yet nobody knows which causes each of them. There are a few theories and some of them are widely accepted but still not proven. Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disorder that is quite common. The causes are know but are very interesting and there have been many instances of people who have it but do not know. In regards to history, Alexander the Great was one greatest leaders of all time. Empire stretched much over the ancient world and created a wealth of knowledge in the library of Alexandra. Ronald Reagan was in my opinion one of the greatest presidents, he brought America close together like never before. Winston Churchill was during WWII one a great leader that has always been of great interest to me. The topic that I am going to do is going to be neurodegenerative disease. Because there are so many different things that can affect it, and the theories behind them. It is something that plagues America yet nobody knows much about them at all. Kids all the time are born with autism. Some of them have only minor cases while others have very major ones. Only few are ever able to be consider "highly functioning." As far for Alzheimer's there are many factors like amyloid plagues that occur but that has not been proven as a cause. While there are other theories of cell cycling that occurs before plagues. But there are no reasons found for why these cells are cycling. It a disease with no proven cause. That is what makes it so interesting to me. Nonetheless, it would be a very interesting thing to research and could be observed very easily. And also as you could imagine many doctors have written papers on their own theories for the cause. There is a plethora of information that exists.
ReplyDeleteWhile deep in thought I came up with a few possible topics for my paper. Number one: The short and long term effects of red wine on the body. My parents are wine connoisseurs, or so it seems, and I have heard a few interesting facts about drinking a glass per day. I’d be interested in figuring out what the deal really is. Topic possibility number two: Posted speed limits and their effect on accidents. We’ve all heard the saying speed kills, but is there a certain threshold where your way more likely to die than others? I also wonder if every driver traveled at the posted speed limit, would the accident fatality rate change at all. The third topic I came up with tonight is gun control. Guns are my father’s hobby so I’ve been exposed to them my whole life. Gun control is touchy with a lot of people and laws regulating the purchase of them are constantly debated. Researching the facts behind these regulations would uncover a lot. I’m not real sure about this one or how I could develop it but it would be cool to research how the term “I love you” has developed a less significant meaning over time. They used to be the most powerful combination of words there was. Now days, kids especially throw the word love around like it means nothing. The final possible topic I thought up was teen pregnancy and its effects on the couple, specifically the father. The toll that a baby can put on a marriage is insane, let alone a bf & gf couple that have been together for some stupid number of months. Not only does the mother have a burden placed on her, but getting your girlfriend pregnant will be immense strain on the father. Choosing from this list, I am most interested in researching the first idea that came to my head, the short and long term effects of drinking red wine daily. If in fact the small amount of alcohol does improve one’s overall well being then I do believe there would be a lot more wine drinkers out there. I could collect my research from a variety of sources; one being liquor store owner to see if they know anything about this topic. A great interview for this would be a doctor. They would know what alcohol does to the body, and hopefully be able to compare regular alcohol (hard or beer) to that which is in red wine. I have the feeling that it’s not the alcohol in which created the red wine buzz. But rather another ingredient; uncovering that could possibly lead to another, non-alcoholic substance that could produce the same benefits.
ReplyDeleteI started to jot down a whole bunch of topics that interest me such as hobbies, trends, and history. Under these topics I got more specific, and narrowed the topics down so that they were not so general. The narrowed down topics came out to be Fashion trends, Facebook, music, sports, and diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s. I picked fashion because I know there are a variety of subjects that I can pick from this one topic. I am also interested in Medical school and the percent of people that get accepted. So this topic definitely popped up. I know that applying for Medical school is difficult in itself, but actually getting accepted is ten times harder. I want to research what the typical well rounded student who gets accepted participated in, and what they went through to get in. I believe this topic is a good idea because I know that I will be able to pull up a lot of facts about it. From gender, race, Universities, and more, I can pull up different information based on my topic. I know that I can ask myself questions that I can find the answer through research and expand on. This is also a good choice for me because this is a topic of greatest interest to me right now. I plan on going to Medical school, and I am very interested in pulling out the most facts that I can get in order to reach my goal. I already know of a couple people that either plan on, or who are already in Medical school, that I can interview in order to get some information. I know I can look for articles in the college of Medicine right here at Florida State University. I believe this topic is the most relevant to me, and I will not be bored doing the research.
ReplyDeleteTopics that interest me for the sake of research would include effects of depression, effects of child abuse, both which are obviously have negative influences on people around them and the people themselves. I would like to study mental illnesses, and mental institutions, but I feel these would be a little out of reach for me. Other topics that peak my interest human relationships, in the affectionate sense. I have severe experience within relationships themselves, but I would be more interested from an objective standpoint.
ReplyDeleteThe best options for me to research of the previous listed would probably have to be the effects of depression, or affectionate relationships. I personally have experience within both of these topics, which would allow me to make some personal relations and have a closer understanding to them. They are the better choices because not only are they simple enough to research, but I can easily conduct interviews, observations, and experiments. These are concepts that people deal with every day, thus the available information should be more than necessary for my research paper. I do not think that I should complete exclude the effects of child abuse though, as I believe I could find sufficient information, the problem would only be in interviews or observations as it is a more personal issue. I do feel, however, that i can completely exclude my interest in mental disorders and institutions as i feel the information available would not satisfy my curiosity, in addition to the fact that they would be far harder to research. Currently I have not generated the actual research questions, but I have narrowed the topics down far enough so I can start brainstorming research questions.
As everyone before me has said, I too have several topics that peaked my interest fortunately but also unfortunately it was very easy for me to narrow it down to one. The issue that had been pressing me the most are guns, gun laws and the right to bear arms. This issue is such a pressing and relevant issue for me because I recently (past Friday) was the victim of a home invasion, where three men invaded home at 10:20 a.m. with a revolver and anAK47 assault rifle. After this traumatic incident my first question was where can criminals or average street people find these type of firearms? I was later informed by my uncle a former police officer that Ak47’s are very common among the black market and are very cheap and dangerous guns that’s why they are the ideal weapon for criminals and individuals with more “urban” connections. Along with researching about gun laws, gun control, etc. I could research the ins and outs of how guns are made and operated. Guns are such a great topic to discuss as well because there are such a large variety of guns and modifications for them. Also relevant to my research would be how guns and gun accessories are distributed and the history of those gun makers and distributors. I could do further research in legal text books on cases involving guns that really standout. For example in June of 2009 the city of Chicago upheld an ordinance banning all handguns and automatic weapons within city limits, but of course to uphold that ordinance is a breach of our constitutional rights, the ordinance was shot down by the Supreme Court. For these and many other reasons I think guns pretty much in general are a great topic to discuss. In the event that I needed to choose another topic I would probably pick tattoos only because one of my roommates is a tattoo artist.
ReplyDeleteToo much freedom is a little intimidating so thinking of a topic for this paper as daunting, were too many options but I narrowed them to: traveling to Italy or even a Caribbean island, Athletic Training, Narcolepsy, Single Parent homes and the psychology involved with that, and the history of make-up or fashion. I have narrowed it down to Single Parent homes or the history of make-up or fashion. My parents were happily married for 20+ years until the summer of 2007 my dad passed away from a heart attack and now I was left with one parent. I think of what my life would be like with two parents and I’m sure that kids whose parents divorced can relate to this. This shift in the home life can have many affects on the child whether good or bad. I’m interested in how this psychologically affects the kids and even the parents or parent. I have always loved fashion and I grew up around it because my mom was a fashion designer since she was 19. We recently started a bathing suit line together so I would like to see how fashion has evolved and the people that have left a mark on it. I also love make up because it can be an expression of your personality or just to enhance your natural beauty. I have always wondering who thought of putting black stuff on your eyelashes or even tan stuff on your face. I would pick a few aspects of make-up; tell the history of that product, what it is made of and even the people who have contributed to make-up.
ReplyDeleteChoosing what to write about, as most of my peers here have mentioned is very difficult. As we talked about in class it is important to pick a topic that we are passionate about because that will make this assignment much more enjoyable and easier to write. Since this will be the longest paper I have written so far in my education I am a little concerned about finding enough material to cover one subject. The first topic I have thought about is music. I wonder what the importance of music is and how it effects listeners? I could never go a day without listening to music which I find to have in common with most people. I would like to research the capabilities of music like why it makes people happy. A second topic I am interested in is the fact that I find marriage very important and often wonder who I will end up with in life. How to pick the person you will spend the rest of your life with is something that would be fun to research. I would like to personally know what to base this decision off of. Another topic I would like to explore is the important role parents play in their children's life. I think every vital moment between parent and child truly effects them and their future. I believe this is over looked by many which is why I would like to bring this to attention. A fourth topic I am interested in is the issue of texting and driving. I would like to know why it is so dangerous and why it is important that we have laws preventing this from occurring. I have heard that the same places in your brain that you use to drive are taken up by the process of texting, I would like to explore this fact further. A finally issue I find myself very interested in is the relationships one human being has with another, whether that be through being family members, friends, or spouses. I find it fascinating how important each aspect is in ones life. Tying this into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs I feel that researching one of these topics would mean a great deal to me. His pyramid consists of, starting from the bottom which is the most basic concepts, Physiological Needs: Air, Water, Food, Shelter, Sleep, Sex, the next is Safety and Security, the following is Love and Belongingness, then comes Self-Esteem and finally we reach the peak which ends with Self-Actualization: Vitality, Creativity, Self-Sufficiency, Authenticity, Playfulness, and Meaningfulness. These levels lead me to wonder about marriage and the importance of it which is being overlooked in today’s modern society. A research question in which I have no doubt that I would be able to write 8 to 10 pages about is simply why is it important to be married? An observation I could make is studying the people at a restaurant, a place where people go to celebrate or to take a break from cooking to enjoy food and conversation. I could observe the interactions between couples, how much they laugh or how much they do not, how much time is spent with nothing said, etc. For information regarding this topic I could look in family/science class textbooks, national surveys and studies, and scholarly articles. Now that I have finally decided what to write about, I am excited to begin writing and researching!
