Katy Perry

Her Rise to Fame

Singer, songwriter, and musician, Katy Perry's birth name was Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, although her mother's maiden name is Perry. She grew up in Santa Barbara, California. To many it is surprising that she grewup in a conservative home, being she writes about the sexual exploration of kissing a girl, in her song, “I kissed a girl.” Her parents were both pastors. Her parents did not allow her to listen to popular music or rock. Perry tells, Entertainment Weekly, “The only things I was allowed to listen to were the Sister Act 1 and 2 soundtracks.” Many of her fans, including me were surprised to find out that she is naturally a blond. On her road to fame, Perry released a Christian album called Katy Hudson. It reached literally maybe 100 people," the singer tells Entertainment Weekly, "and then the label went bankrupt."

Claim to Fame
Katy Perry’s hit single, which led to her rise of fame, was “I kissed a girl.” That song was a breakthrough for her, ever since then she has been one of the world’s hottest pop sensations. In fact, when Katy Perry comes to mind, I think I speak for everybody else who knows of her, when I say she is known for her over-the-top fashions; which are inspired by the 1940’s pin-up look, her original props on stage, and her catchy tunes. She always surprises her audience with her risqué themes and her sexual conations in her lyrics. She elaborates on her lyrics with Entertainment Weekly, "They're not meant to be 'Oh, no!' songs! They are my life, and I guess my life is a little bit 'Oh, no,'"

Here are the main lyrics to “I Kissed a Girl”:

No, I don't even know your name
It doesn't matter
Your my experimental game
Just human nature
It's not what, good girls do
Not how they should behave
My head gets so confused
Hard to obey

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don't mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don't mean I'm in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

Her success: a dream come true

On august 24th, 2010, Katy Perry released her second album, Teenage Dream. With the help of the success of the lead single, California Gurls on this album she reached and topped the Billboard 200 albums chart. Following this success, she earned four Grammy nominations. Perry’s songs are fun and catchy. Yes, she is a pop star, so girls mostly hear her music, but that doesn’t mean that her music isn’t enjoyed or liked by guys too. Her fan base includes men and women, girls and boys. Men admire her and so do women. She was ranked #1 on Maxim’s 2010 Hot 100. Young women all over the world love her for her music and fun and cute fashion choices. Presently, unfortunately for all the Katy Perry lovers out there, she is happily married to Russell Brand.
